Paramount Reboots Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in Live-Action Format

Paramount is negotiating with Neal H. Moritz, producer of the “Sonic the Hedgehog” trilogy, to create a new live-action film in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles universe in a similar style. The studio is reviewing its franchises, betting on brands it fully owns — Paramount has held the rights to TMNT since 2009, and after the failure of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” in 2016, the company halted live-action production, switching to animation, but now intends to unlock the universe’s potential.

In parallel, the studio closed the animated series “Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” (a spin-off of “Mutant Mayhem”) mid-season — the project “does not align with the owners’ vision,” as Paramount stated, and showrunner Christopher Yost confirmed that upcoming episodes will be the last. Also postponed is the adaptation of the comic “The Last Ronin,” which Ilya Naishuller (“Hardcore Henry,” “Nobody”) was supposed to direct as a hybrid live-action and CGI film with an adult rating. Meanwhile, the animated sequel “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2” with producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and director Jeff Rowe remains scheduled for September 17, 2027.
